…she said that that is one thing that attracts her to WLL is that it is locally driven and the listening session is just the beginning with planned long term follow up through learning sessions, meeting locally identified needs… a brilliant structure! She really likes how the USDA agencies provide the staff time, though the success is dependent on non-agency involvement. She feels that staff support will help maintain sustainability. She especially likes that we listen! She said it is great that the agency & state team do not come with preconceived notions of what local women want but ask them & listen, taking action accordingly.
WLL at Conference for Women in Sustainable Agriculture
Yesterday, Women, Land & Legacy’s state team was fortunate enough to present at the 4th National Conference for Women in Sustainable Agriculture: Cultivating our Food, Farms and Future. Held in Des Moines this year, Women, Food and Ag Network plays host for the three day conference that ends today. More than 450 female farmers and healthy food advocates from across the nation attended.
Women, Land and Legacy presented during a break-out session titled “Listen and Lead Small-Group Dialogue.” State team members joined together to present on WLL as a statewide, locally led program, its Listening Sessions, and actually demonstrated the small group process. Twenty four women were in the ninety minute session.
As our way to demonstrate the listening session process, and in keeping with the theme of the conference, we asked the women in our session three questions:
1) How do you cultivate sustainable agriculture in your community?
2) What has been your biggest challenge in cultivating your sustainable agriculture community?
3) What resources did you use to meet those challenges?
These questions provided a great dialogue for listening and learning from each other. Many questions were asked such as how they could bring WLL to their home state, what was the organization and role of the state team, and what types of topics do local teams choose for their meetings.
Attendees shared how they could use the small group process in their own communities. Many agreed that the process seemed great for groups where individuals don’t know and trust each other. One women’s notable comment was that, for her, listening is a way to show trust and respect for someone she doesn’t yet have a relationship with. It’s a way to build up trust and understanding.
As a member of the WLL state team in the session yesterday, the sharing of ideas, visions and challenges that all female pioneers in agriculture face, not just in Iowa but across the nation, was more that just a memorable experience; it was inspiring.
WFAN was created in 1997 by a handful of visionary women – pioneering female farmers and healthy food advocates around the nation. Since then, WFAN has grown to a national network of more than 3,200 women and men, dedicated to gender equity in agriculture and to supporting the growing number of women engaged in all aspects of sustainable agriculture – through networking, education, and leadership development.
Winnebago & Worth Counties Host
The Winnebago and Worth County Women, Land and Legacy group hosted a program entitled “Caring for the Land” which was led by Ed Cox, Staff Attorney for Drake University Agricultural Law Center in Des Moines. He covered information about implementing conservation practices, conservation on leased land, beginning farmer programs, and transitioning to the next generation: ensuring a conservation legacy. More than 80 Worth and Winnebago County women participated in the meeting. Share the activities of your WLL group with us at stateteam@womenlandandlegacy.org today!

Success!
On June 13, the first annual Iowa Women’s Landowner Conference took place in Brooklyn, Iowa. It was a great turnout of over 100 women from 18 counties. The target was a 6-county area surrounding Brooklyn. Iowa county WLL had a leisurely partnership with Iowa Land Sales and Farm Management to “co-sponsor” the event. It seemed very well received by the women in attendance and focused on some of the most popular topics with WLL, estate planning and farm leases. Mike Pearson was the emcee and of course, added an element of professionalism to the event. Tanya Meyer, WLL State Team member, was able to be part of the final panel for Q&A and had a chance to talk about WLL in general. An evaluation included a question that allowed women to show if they wanted more information about WLL.

State Team
Women, Land & Legacy
WLL’s Pilot Program
Women, Land and Legacy’s (WLL) mission is to bring Iowa’s farm/rural women together in local listening and learning sessions and to provide tools and opportunities to empower them to act on their landscapes and in their communities.
As WLL is grounded in a network of local women, it is based on the abilities, interests, and needs of local women. Reports from initial listening and learning sessions (available at www.womenlandandlegacy.org/reports) show convincing evidence that WLL helps build confidence among women, giving them a voice, a sense of empowerment, and more connections and influence, thus expanding the human resources available in rural communities.

The WLL State Team has begun working with 3 local teams to build the next phase of WLL to further foster this personal growth experienced by WLL participants and link it not only to the land, but to their communities. Planning for this phase is based on findings that show women feel that they work more effectively through social leadership: encouraging participation and connecting people.
A grant from USDA Rural Development has provided funding for this work. The grant provides for:
- Working with local teams to provide tools and opportunities for better understanding of leadership as a shared activity rather than a role of individuals in positions of power
- Providing tools to local teams to connect this leadership to small, rural community and business needs
- Updating and connecting the current website and creating a newsletter to better communicate and connect with WLL local teams and the general public.
- Exploring and creating social media strategies to meet the ongoing requests of local teams to better connect and learn from each other
- Documenting outcomes to help agencies and organizations better serve women as they strive towards meeting their goals for their families, land and businesses
Stay tuned for further updates to this project.
